Refugee Kitwaro | Burundian Refugee Collection (blue) | Inyabu Design
Size: 6” x 12” (diameter x height incl. lid)
Materials: Star grass, papyrus, recycled food rations bags
Our 2018 feature collection is produced by Burundian refugee artisans in the Mtendeli refugee camp in the northwest of Tanzania through a collaboration with MADE51, the international refugee-made product brand by UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency) . For the refugee products, sacks in which refugees receive their monthly food rations are recycled and woven into the grasses which are harvested in and around the camp. The signature “Inyabu” design of this Kitwaro Basket stems from the Burundian word “inyabutatu”. It refers to the incredible “resilience” of refugee artisans to use their weaving to provide a decent life for their families within the most challenging environment of the refugee camp. Kitwaro Baskets are used traditionally to store local grains or to bear gifts during celebrations. In a modern household, they make beautiful decorative items and can be used to store valuables and general smaller home articles.
